We are sorry to inform you that, due to the essential redevelopment of the Bars and Catering operation which is scheduled to take place over the summer months, it is not possible for Burnley Mechanics to host a Jazz Summer School in 2009.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone whose support and loyalty have contributed to the success of such a prestigious event. I hope that we have not disappointed your plans for the summer too much.
Yours sincerely
Kirk Worley
Arts and Theatre Manager
Burnley Jazz Summer School Course Director
The late Stan Barker began the Burnley Jazz Summer School back in 1987. Together with Alan Daiches, they established an event of cultural significance and importance, greatly enriching the artistic life of the area. After Stan was called to the Great Jam Session In The Sky, the summer school first went to Rob Buckland's leadership, and then to me. I like to think we've honoured Stan's example and inspiration, helping the event to grow and become one of the UK's foremost and enjoyable Jazz summer schools.
To have a gap in 2009 doesn't feel healthy or appropriate, so even now I am seeing what options exist for running a similar event somewhere else, however we shouldn't hold out too much hope. In the meantime I would just like to thank Tutors and Students and Burnley Mechanics Staff alike who have helped make the course what it is over all these years. Let us hope this is only a temporary blip in what will continue to be an illustrious history.

Week one runs in three strands:
Stage 1 - designed to help and encourage those who are keen on jazz but are new to (or inexperienced in) the language of jazz and improvisation. Usually led by Steve Berry.
Stage 2 – is for musicians with some familiarity and experience. Conducted primarily in the format of ‘Small Bands’, consisting of Rhythm Section and Front Line players we look at the music in context of repertoire.
Tutors: Nikki Iles, Mike Hall, Nick Smart, Chris Montague and Eryl Roberts.
Singers - Lee Gibson coaches people in the art and craft of jazz singing with the help of a resident piano trio.
All 3 strands run separately and come together for occasional large-scale classes and workshops. There are also informal opportunities to jam and rehearse which focus around the evening ‘Jam Sessions’.
An opportunity designed for Piano, Guitar, Bass and Drums. Week One offers much to help and inform such musicians about rhythm section skills and responsibilities (particularly when working with horn players and singers). Week Two adds a greater chance to explore the more intimate and interactive challenges afforded within duo and trio playing.
Tutors: Les Chisnall - Mike Outram - Dave Walsh & Steve Berry
